Circuit City to Close all 567 Stores

The news that Circuit City will close all 567 stores certainly isn't unexpected after two failed attempts at acquisition. Store closing sales will start January 17. The closing will impact 34,000 employees.

Panera Will Open 70 to 90 Stores in 2009

Panera Bread, a chain of bakery cafes, plans to open 70 to 90 stores in 2009. The chain currently has 1250 locations.

It sure is good to see a restaurant chain expanding in this economy!

Monroe Outlet Mall Opening This Summer

The Monroe Outlet Mall is scheduled to open this summer. Chelsea Properties is developing the 400,000 square foot outlet center which will include 120 stores.

Goody's Family Clothing will close all 287 stores
New York & Co will close 40 to 50 stores
World Market, a specialty home retailer, will close 26 of its 296 stores
Oneida will close its 20 Outlet stores

73,000 Retail Store Closings Predicted for First Half of 2009

The International Council of Shopping Centers has predicted that 73,000 retail stores will close in the first half of 2009. The prediction for 2008 was 148,000 which would be the largest number of closures since 2o01 when 151,000 stores closed. Here's a list of Office Depot store closings and Macy's store closings.

Wal-Mart Opening in West Palm Beach Florida

Wal-Mart will open soon in West Palm Beach, Florida at 3222 Commerce Place. The store located near Village Boulevard and 45th Street will open in March and is expected to hire about 300 workers according to a local article. Wal-Mart is one of the few retailers in this recessions to recently post same store sales gains over a year ago.

Shiloh Crossing Shopping Center in Billings Montana is now open with three tenants and more to come this month and early next year. Kohl's Department Store, Candy Town USA and Cellular Connection are currently open with Huntington Learning Center, Subway, City Brew, Carmike and Taco Bell to open over the next few months. The rumor of Macy's coming to Billings has not been confirmed according to a local article.

Trader Joe's opened December 10 near San Francisco State in the Stonestown Mall at 265 Winston Drive San Francisco, California 94132. The store was originally supposed to open in October according to a local article.

The official Office Depot Store Closing list has not been released but reports from news sources across the country have identified Office Depot store closings in California, Colorado, Florida, Maryland, Massachusetts, Minnesota, Missouri, Pennyslvania, and Texas. A more complete list of store closings is below.

Office Depot plans to close almost 10% of its 1163 stores in North America over the next 3 months. It will open only 20 stores in 2009 rather than the 40 it had planned. If your store is closing you can order online at Office Depot's web site.

Tempe Arizona will be losing its Virgin Megastore according to a local article. The Tempe Arizona store will be closing along with the Times Square Virgina Atlantic store in New York. The Northboro shopping center in Massachusetts will reopen after a fire last March. The one-story center at 243 Main Street in Northboro will house Brown’s TV and Appliance, Dawn’s School of Dance and Trend Setters Barber Shop.
